The Burcina Nature Reserve "Felice Piacenza" Special Park (Pollone)

Category: Parks

Pollone

It was Giovanni Piacenza’s patience and tenacity, then that of his son, to turn 57 hectares of the Brich Burcina, in the area of Biella, into a splendid park and garden where exotic plant species live in harmony with our own native plants. The transformation of this hill, located near the Prealps, into an informal and landscaped garden began in 1850 and was modeled after the English gardens of the time. Today, the main characteristic of the Burcina is the blooming of the rhododendrons, originally from the Caucasus and the Himalayas, located in an almost two hectare hollow. The Park, therefore, is an historical garden which developed on the land of Biella and Pollone on the hill of the same name, a gentle hill close to Biella’s Prealps. Taking the road that goes up the hill, one encounters pleasant corners created from human knowledge and fantasy such as the little sequoia lake and others dominated by the original woods of beech, chestnut, maple, ash, oak, and cherry trees. In the highest part of the Park, plant life typical to hill areas dominates such as birch, beech, and chestnut trees and underbrush such as heather, covering its entire pink spectrum, and brings to mind mountain landscapes. The summit is an interesting panoramic spot to look out over Biella’s mountains and plains.
