The Candia Lake Provincial Park
Category: Parks
This is the first provincial park established in Italy; a first-time experiment created to safeguard these important Piedmont wetlands, well-suited for wintering and nesting birds which have also been recognized by the European Union as a Site of Community Importance. Candia Lake was formed by glaciers and is fed entirely by several underground springs located along the southern bank. It is estimated, therefore, that the water is completely replaced in no fewer than 6 to 7 years.
Of the park’s 425 registered flower species, about half are closely tied to lake and marsh environments. In the lake, water lilies and yellow pond lilies bloom along with yellow floating hearts and water chestnuts. The area dominated by Paluetta, instead, has tufted sedge and yellow iris along with rarer species such as buckbean, bladderwort, marsh cinquefoil, and water violet. In these habitats, birds such as bitterns, great crested grebes, Eurasian coots, northern shovelers, mallards, and birds of prey such as the black kite and the osprey are found. The fish life is made-up of northern pike, rudd, triotto (a fish native to Italy, which is similar to a European roach), bleak, and chub.
In 1893, the first regatta on Lago di Candia was held and, from that moment, a story began which continues to renew itself thanks to the work of the Societa Canottieri (Rowing Society) that still today organizes events and sports competitions.
