The Lagoni di Mercurago Nature Park (Arona)

Category: Parks

Arona

This park was created with the very specific aim of protecting the six moraine circles which formed around Lake Maggiore during the last ice age. The extensive woods that characterize this protected area consist primarily of English oaks, sessile oaks, birch, Scots pine, and alders; there are also chestnut and black locust trees. In the wetlands, there is prized water and marsh flora including the white water lily, the very tiny and carnivorous bladderwort, and another carnivorous plant, the sundew. The park’s wetlands are, in fact, the park’s natural “center” because they contain the ideal habitat for most of the more than one hundred bird species - nesters and winterers and migratory birds - which populate the park.
Four paths created as self-guided tours open up the Lagoni di Mercurago (the Great Mercurago Lakes) to be discovered in new and different ways: the blue path for the wetlands, the red path for the woods, the violet one for archeological discoveries, and the orange path for the all the productive activities taking place in the park. There is also a path that is about ten kilometers long created for biking and hiking lovers.
