The Valle del Ticino Nature Park (Cameri)

Category: Parks

Cameri

The protected area follows the right bank of the Ticino River, from Lake Maggiore through the entire Piedmont region. The landscape includes the characteristic oxbow lakes, the pools of water formed by the river during high periods, which are an ideal habitat for migratory birds due to their abundant supply of food. The woods take up 60% of the protected area and consist mostly of broad-leaved trees. In the park, very diverse natural environments co-exist, from farmed fields to the moors, which are called “baragge” in the Novara dialect.
Among the sites available to visitors, there is the old Bellinzago mill, the only water mill still working in an area that used water power in the past as the energy source for its main economic activities. Entrance, instead, to the Bosco Vedro Special Nature Reserve, a large artificial island with a ringing station for migratory birds, is allowed exclusively for scientific work or within a guided tour. The animal life includes squirrels, European rabbits, hedgehogs, and hares. The fish life includes trout, pike, and chub. The bird life includes wild duck, grey heron, common moorhen, and pheasant.
