La Mandria Regional Park (Venaria)

Category: Parks

Venaria Reale

The land of the La Mandria is one of the last examples left of the level land forest that has been covering the entire Po valley for thousands of years. The dominant tree once present on this land was the Pedunculate Oak, now rarely seen in Italy. Today, trees found in the park are the hornbeam, ash, tilia, elm and sessile oak. Being able to observe every kind of bird of prey, black storks, cranes, great egrets, curlews and much more just a few kilometres from Torino is a privilege found exclusively at La Mandria. Ospreys, emydidae, grey and brown herons living in the woodsy area where they nest can all be seen by the lake basins within the territory of the park. The Mandria’s past as the royal hunting reserve has left an indelible mark on the park’s fauna judging from the presence of many hoofed animals such as deer and boars. But it is this forest’s fauna, from its insects to the amphibians and birds, due to the completeness of their presence, that possesses a heightened conservationist value, making this habitat unique and therefore a SIC: site important to the community.
