Stretch of the River Po – Torino section (Moncalieri)

Category: Parks

Moncalieri

This is the second of the three large sections between which the management of the Piemonte stretch of the River Po is divided. It includes the stretch of the river between Casalgrasso and Crescentino, in the provinces of Torino and Vercelli. Here the river runs through the most densely populated areas: Torino, intensive cultivations, and mining areas. The Parco del Po (Po River Park) was established especially to contain the impact of indiscriminate urbanization on the environment, and to protect the delightful natural river landscape that has survived, which is of great importance for migratory birds that stop here on their journeys. The Torino stretch includes portions of the River Sangone, of the River Stura di Lanzo and the River Dora. Here are situated twelve protected areas; eight of which are special nature Reserves and four are Areas with facilities. The warm waters are home to graylings, marble trout and loaches, while the humid areas house amphibians such as the Italian Agile Frog, the tree frog, the spade foot, the common toad, the yellow-bellied toad and the green toad. Kingfishers, sand martins and bee-eaters nest on the steep banks of the river; the oxbow areas, conversely, are the ideal environment for many species of aquatic birds.
