Special Nature Reserve of the Bosco del Vaj (Castagneto Po)
Category: Parks
The main characteristic of this nature reserve are woods with oak and chestnut trees and the numerous specimens of beech trees that came to the hills of Torino during the last glaciation. The arrival of numerous species of plants of Mediterranean origin, which migrated from neighbouring Ligurian coasts, dates back to the interglacial periods. Among these plants are: the Turk´s-cap, the Daphne Mezereum and various species of orchids. The hills are characterised by the so-called “Bric” (hills), with steep slopes overlooking the Po valley and gentle slopes on the southern side. There is a rich local fauna, which comprises hedgehogs, shrews, moles, badgers and weasels; the birds population comprises: black kites, sparrow hawks, pheasants, wood pigeons, turtle doves, woodpeckers and tree creepers.
