Special Nature Reserve of the Canneti di Dormelletto
Category: Parks
This protected area, together with the Riserva Naturale di Fondo Toce (Nature Reserve of Fondo Toce), is home to the only remaining relict of the characteristic lake vegetation of the western bank of Lake Maggiore. This bed of reeds is very important, especially for its ecological role in optimising the flow of water, and in purifying water through a balanced absorption of harmful substances that may be poured into the lake. The bed of reeds of Dormelleto (Phragmites australis) and the surrounding woods are an ideal environment for nest building and wintering of numerous ornithological species. There are, in fact, about a hundred species of birds that live here, including some that build nests here, some which come here for the winter and some migrating birds. The Nature Reserve, as opposed to the banks’ vegetation, also houses the Villa Tesio farm, where valuable English thoroughbred horses are bred. The breed Dormello – Oliata was born here and, thanks to the commitment of their breeder Federico Tesio, these horses dominated for a long time the European horse races.
