Special Nature Reserve of the Colle della Torre di Buccione (Orta San Giulio)

The tower of Buccione is the last remaining fortification of a larger castle, mentioned in several XIII century documents. The tower, which overlooks the Lago d’Orta (Orta Lake), is twenty-three metres high and it was used to signal possible danger to the people of the area of the lake, with a bell positioned at the top of the tower; the last remaining bell is kept in the garden of the Town Hall of Orta. The hill used to be a porphyry quarry and is now entirely covered with a chestnut wood.
