Special Nature Reserve La Bessa (Cerrione)

Category: Parks

Cerrione

This Nature Reserve extends over the area of the rivers Elvo and Olobbia. The present appearance of the ground was caused by the gold mining activity that took place here in Roman and pre-Roman periods, in such enormous proportions that at times up to 5.000 people worked here. Discarded stones piled up, shaping the landscape and creating mountains of cobbles, called “ciapei”, up to ten metres high, which alternate with narrow, long and deep valleys covered with vegetation, called “bunde” that divide them. This ‘sea of cobbles’, which extends over about 7 kilometres, offers a sight that is unique in the whole of Europe. From a nature point of view, in the Reserve can be found several botanical species and a rich entomological fauna.
