Special Nature Reserve of Monte Mesma (Ameno)
Category: Parks
Although rows of vines used to occupy most of the hill of Mesma, it is now almost entirely covered with chestnut and oak woods, with the exception of the area surrounding the monastery where the Franciscan Friars tend to meadows and vegetable gardens. Wilder vegetation characterises the eastern and northern slopes of the hill; here, near the Torrente (River) Agogna, false acacias, reed beds and hygrophilous plants predominate. There is a wonderful view of the Lake Orta from the top of the hill. The lake has had a favourable effect on the environment, and it facilitated the proliferation of evergreen plants such as hollies, boxes, cherry laurels and yew trees.
