Special Nature Reserve of the Sacro Monte della Santissima Trinità di Ghiffa

The wood that covers the foot of the Sacro Monte (Sacred Mountain) is a combination of broad-leaved plants, mainly chestnut trees, and large numbers of maple trees, ash trees, alders and birches. In the scrub we can find yew trees, hollies, butcher´s brooms and cherry laurels, while the area near the Sanctuary is home to numerous lime trees as well as being home to an exotic species, the eastern white pine, which was introduced here during recent reforestation works. The animal population numbers roe deer, badgers, foxes, squirrels, pine martens and stone martens, while the bird population includes a particularly significant species, the great black woodpecker, which is a rather rare species normally found only in woods at high altitude. The Sacro Monte overlooks the Lake Maggiore from a magnificent location and has the characteristics of a baroque complex, even though it is unfinished. Numerous votive chapels are interspersed along the paths that mark the slopes of the mountain.
