Special Nature Reserve of the Val Sarmassa (Vinchio)

Category: Parks

Vinchio

In this Nature Reserve, wood covered hills alternate with meadows, fields and vineyards, forming an extremely eye-catching landscape. Here we can also find a rich fauna, including squirrels, dormice, hares, foxes, hedgehogs, amphibians and dragonflies. The bird population includes: hoopoes, woodpeckers, jays and bee-eaters. This area comprises part of the Pliocene Field of the province of Asti. Here, in fact, in the surface sand and clay, numerous fossils of seashells and molluscs can be found. Tradition has it that in 935 A.D. Aleramo fought a battle here that lead to the defeat of the invading Berbers and, to commemorate it, the hill that dominates the old battlefield is called "Brich dei saraceni" (Saracens’ Hill).
