Provincial Special Nature Reserve of the Stagno di Oulx
Category: Parks
This stretch of water was created when, in 1860, large quantities of clay were taken from a peat-bog to manufacture the bricks needed to build the Galleria del Frejus (Frejus Tunnel). The depression that was created by this process was in a short time filled by the waters of the springs located at the foot of the Monte Cotolivier (Mount Cotolivier), which formed a small lake that later became a pond were plants and animals typical of humid areas settled. The Stagno di Oulx (Oulx Pond), also known as Lago Borello (Borello Lake), is home to plants that are rare in the rest of the alpine arc, such as: the Bermuda grass, the giant garlic and the black bog-rush. The surrounding wood comprises birches, Scots pines, alder buckthorns and creeping willows. In the water of the pond live animals such as the extremely rare crayfish, rare dragonflies such as the Vagrant darter and numerous aquatic non-migrating and migrating birds.
