Protected Area Boschi e Rocche del Roero (Sommariva Perno)

Category: Parks

Sommariva Perno

This Protected Area is situated on the north-eastern end of the province of Cuneo, and its landscape comprises gorges, peaks and narrow winding valleys covered with thick woods. This landscape is characteristics of an area that comprises ten towns: from Cisterna d´Asti to Bra. The Rocche (Rocks) mark the boundaries of the areas where the river Tanaro has eroded the mountain, and has unearthed the grey and blue marls that have given a rounded appearance to the mountains in the area of Govone, as well as the chalky beds of Santa Vittoria d´Alba and Monticello. Since ancient times the sunnier slopes of the hills have been used for viticulture. The other areas have become farmlands where strawberries, peaches and the traditional “madernassa” pears are grown. The northern territories are for the most part covered with woods of broad-leaved plants and conifers.
