The Sacro Monte di Crea Nature Park (Ponzano Monferrato)

Category: Parks

Ponzano Monferrato

One of the highest points in the Basso Monferrato hills, the area of Sacro Monte di Crea, has ecological niches where several species of Mediterranean plant life – such as wild saffron - managed to survive the ice ages. The plant life on the southern, more temperate slope consists of a dense thicket of downy oak and small ash while the northern slope, steeper and more shaded, has mostly small-leaved elm, cherry, hornbeam, English oak, chestnut, Norway maple, and sycamore maple. Also on the northern side, there are several mountain species that are remnants of the ice age, such as the common Turk’s cap lily, monkshood, and various orchid varieties. The underbrush is made up of cornelian cherry, fusaria, common bladder senna, gorse, and service viburnum. Fauna consists of reptiles and small mammals alongside larger birds: buzzards, kestrels, long-eared owls, civets, barn owls, and tawny owls. Birds of prey include: blackbirds, storm-cocks, finches, green woodpecker, and wallcreepers; among passerines, there is the great tit.
