Category: Science and technology

Bellino

The purpose of this museum is to bear witness “not only to the inventiveness and skill of the Bellinese people, but also demonstrate their traditions and lifestyle”. However it is also the first stop on the “sightseeing itinerary of the local meridians”: a legacy consisting of over 30 sundials mostly made by Bellinese artists between 1700 and 1934. The tour winds from the 1300 m altitude of the village of Ribiera and arrives as far as 1900 m on the granges of Queiroun, Coulet and Coumbes, near S. Anna. The museum has three separate rooms: "the starry vault”, which reproduces the constellation of the Little Dipper, and therefore includes the North Star, which was a reference point of the astronomical north; the “gnomonic vault”, where illustrative panels explain the practical interpretation of the sundials and present reproductions of the measuring instruments used in that era are kept; the “Bellino vault”, where the use of splendid photographs depict the local Alpine architecture and give information about Valle di Bellino, its traditions and lifestyle.
