Ecomuseo delle guide alpine di Balme "Antonio Castagneri"
Category: Eco-museums
Antonio Castagneri was the most famous mountain guide born in this small mountain town where, during the 19th century, the profession had already been handed down for generations. Balme’s eco-museum is, above all, a tribute to a small town which has survived over the years, through subsistence and isolation, and to the history of mountaineering. Balme’s mountain guides were, in fact, were among the leaders of that pioneering season, escorting the first climbing enthusiasts who came to town attracted by the idea of spending their free time in mountain sports. Mementos and photos guide visitors on a discovery of the history of mountaineering, on elements from the mountain environment (minerals, fauna, and flora), and of the local daily life and culture. The museum is part of a tour route, which can be followed on foot or in snow shoes, along the Val Servin trail that gives visitors an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the area’s natural history.
