In the Palazzo degli Ufficiali, inside the Fort, the Gallery of Uniforms from the Royal Italian Military has been installed. It represents a panorama of the events of the Royal Italian Military from 1861 to 1945. Complete uniforms on 90 mannequins (three accompanied by horses) illustrate the evolution of military uniforms, of weaponry, of decorations and their accessories. The “Aliberti-Riva” collection is considered by experts to be the most complete in Italy and can boast the presence of very rare and important pieces with true historic worth, such as the uniform that belonged to a Garibaldian who participated in “I Mille” (The Thousand) and the ceremonial outfit along with an everyday outfit which belonged to the last King of Italy, Umberto II. A visit to the Gallery offers a tour of 21 showcases which reconstruct scenes of military life with corresponding mannequins carrying out their duties: the barracks, the trenches, maneuvers, the horse stables, the paymaster’s office, the officers club, and headquarters. Every showcase has captions in Italian, German, and English and audio commentary linked to a video on a monitor which tells the story of a century of Italian history in short films and film clips from the period.
