Appartamenti Reali di Vittorio Emanuele II (Venaria)
Category: Tradition
The Royal Apartment at the Mandria is the central fulcrum of the buildings making up the Borgo Castello and it occupies the façade that looks onto the Reggia di Venaria Reale. These apartments also shared historical events with the Reggia di Venaria Reale until 1862, the year in which Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy (who had been king since 1849) expressed the desire to attach the estate of the Regia Mandria della Venaria Reale onto his Private Legacy. The king had already decided to move to the Castello de La Mandria in 1859 with Rosa Vercellana, Countess of Mirafiori e Fontanafredda at the time. His succession to the throne of Umberto I marked his detachment from the Royal Residence at la Mandria, which was sold to the Marquis Luigi Medici del Vascello between the years 1882 and 1887. The Apartment, which can be entered by a stairway, was set up in two “private” areas: one dedicated to the king and the other to Rosa Vercellana, split up into areas used by court activities. These rooms still hold the taste and arrangement, furniture and artworks that belonged to their original owners. The 15 rooms are personalised by precious collections that identify the eclectic taste of the last half of the 19th century, brought up to date and completed by Domenico Ferri, architect and decorator of royal residences. Credit for the choice of artists and craftsmen in creating living quarters more suitable to the private interests of the king is his.
