Savoy Residences
Castello di Moncalieri
Category: Savoy Residences
The castle, an ancient medieval fortress belonging to the House of Savoy during the second half of the 15th century, was progressively embellished until its destruction during the French occupation in the 16th century. Between the 12th and 13th century, Carlo Emanuele I, Christine of France, and even Carlo Emanuele II restructured the complex and entrusted this to the court architects: Amedeo di Castellamonte, Filippo Juvarra, and Benedetto Alfieri. The present structure, dating from the reign of Vittorio Amedeo III, is overseen by Francesco Martinez. During the 19th century, Vittorio Emanuele II built three royal apartments here: one for his wife and himself, one for his daughter Maria Clotilde, and one for Princess Maria Letizia. It is possible to tour the royal apartments; part of the building, however is used as barracks by the Italian military corps, the Carabinieri. At present, work in the park is being carried out, where the lookout tower, the dairy farm, and the riding school located within Piazza d’Armi will be restored. Particularly important is the upper park that, besides being the home of several rare indigenous botanical species, offers an extraordinary panoramic view over the entire royal residential complex.
