Savoy Residences
Castello di Govone
Category: Savoy Residences
Until 1792 when it passed to the House of Savoy, the Castello di Govone belonged to the Solaro Counts. In 1678, Ottavio Francesco Solaro, a noted diplomat, began reconstruction work on the ancient medieval manor to transform it into a prestigious residency. With the extinction of the family, the castle went to the crown and Vittorio Emanuele III gave it to his son Carlo Felice. The re-modernization and embellishment project began between 1819 and 1825. The interior decorations and wood furnishings are particularly valuable as are the contrasting 18th century naturalistically cut fixtures, statues, and decorative elements from Venaria Palace in the 19th century garden. Govone’s urban structure is an example of the castle-hamlet union, a union documented by ancient planimeters, but also by a series of hanging walls and by the park itself with a significant social layout.
