Savoy Residences
Castello Reale di Valcasotto (Garessio)
Category: Savoy Residences
The ancient Charterhouse was founded mid-way through the 12th century in the upper Tanaro Valley, in an isolated place perfect for prayer and contemplation. The complex, born as a monastery, has undergone fires and raids during its long history to such an extent that, between the 17th and the 18th century, it needed to be completely restructured. After the initial intervention by Francesco Gallo, creator of the most important ecclesiastic buildings in the Monregale area, the final phase was entrusted to Bernardo Vittone, one of the most important architects of Piedmont Baroque, who designed the new monumental cupola and the façade in the green stone from Val Casotto.
In 1837, Carlo Alberto acquired it to transform it into a hunting lodge and summer home. Used for hunting, especially by Vittorio Emanuele II, the Valcasotto Castle counterbalances the original monumentality of the exterior and the chapel with the rigor and simplicity of its interiors characterized by sparse furnishings, almost middleclass, which underlines the private tone of the residency. Today, the Valcasotto Castle is the southernmost residency on the Savoy circuit and is part of a tourist district that connects the Pamparato and Mondovi valleys with the Lurisia and theVinadio spas, famous for their spring water.
