The castle was built on the ruins of a river home. Acquired by Emanuele Filiberto in 1564, it was redesigned by Carlo and Amedeo di Castellemonte beginning in 1620 because that is what Marie Christine of France wanted. Rebuilt on the French architectural models, with special reference to the models of river castles, it is characterized by grand pavilions, banked corners, and steep roofs in stone. A rest stop for river corteges, used for special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, and important visits, the Valentino Castle became an important residency to then become the seat of the Royal School for Applied Engineering and, today, the seat of the Faculty of Architecture. Having undergone various reconstructions, the actual noble part, which coincides with the large central body where the atrium, the large staircase, and the frescoed halls are located, has returned to its ancient splendor. As have the loggias, the stairway in the cortile d’onore (official courtyard), and the stone façade on the side of the Po River. The Valentino Castle, carefully placed along the Po River and connected to the public park most loved by the residents of Turin – The Valentino, is an important monumental complex, fascinating and filled with surprises. Also quite striking is the adjacent botanical garden filled with rare and unusual collections, comparable only to the botanical garden in Padua for funding.
