Pino Torinese

Founded in 1759, the Torino Observatory was named by Giovanni Battista Beccaria “Gradus Taurinensis”, which means the length of the meridian arc in relation to the geographic position of Torino. Beccaria was succeeded in the management of the Observatory by Abbott Tommaso Valperga di Caluso and Antonio Maria Vassalli Eandi. In 1822 the Observatory, under the management of Giovanni Plana, a follower of the physicist and mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange, was awarded the juridical recognition of official institution of the Kingdom of Piemonte and Sardinia. In 1912, for reasons of “luminous pollution”, the Observatory moved to Pino Torinese, on the hills, at an altitude of over 500 metres. The current structure is based on four domes, two pavilions, a modern calculation centre and a library housing approximately 10,000 volumes. Besides a variety of collections, there are about fifteen works dating from the 16th to the 18th century, and a large number of unbound publications. Considerable amount of theoretic and observational activities take place at the Observatory, based on local, national and international co-operations. The research activity spans from the observational field to the theoretic and instrumental field. The activities are divided into five sectors.
