Borgo e Rocca Medievale (Torino)
Category: History and archaeology
The Medieval Hamlet and Fortress are unique within the Turin’s city museums – resembling more an archeological site or the site of a monument than a museum in the strictest sense. The ensemble, in fact, envisioned by a group of Piedmont artists and intellectuals coordinated by Alfredo D’Andrade, was not created as museum, but as a pavilion for the Italian General Expo which took place in Turin in 1884. The Hamlet, an 19th century reworking of a late-medieval village complete with craftsmen’s shops dedicated to pottery, engraving, wrought iron work, and woodworking was meant to be torn down as soon as the event ended. This ensemble’s enormous success led the City of Turin to purchase it at the end of the event. It became then a “fifth theater” used as a backdrop to the fortress; it is a true and proper castle reproducing the ambience and the rooms of a 15th century manor: the courtyard, the hall for men of arms, the kitchens, the dining room, the prisons, the guard’s room, the noble hall, the bedroom, the oratory, the room for the ladies-in-waiting, the chapel, and the arms canopy. The castle is surrounded by the Giardino del Borgo (the Hamlet’s Garden) created following the footsteps of princely gardens and inaugurated in 1998.
