Buildings of historical importance
Torre Troyana (Asti)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
An excellent scenic spot where one can enjoy the spectacle of the city seen from on high. The Torre Troyana – or Torre dell’Orologio – recently restored and opened to the public, is one of the symbols of Asti and is located in the area of Piazza Medici. Inside, a 199 step staircase allows visitors to reach the merlon level. Built during the second half of the 18th century in Romanesque and Ghibelline styles, it was part of a fortified structure belonging to the rich and powerful Troya family. During the 13th century, following the family’s decline and extinction, it went to the City which installed a clock and city bell in order to mark the hour of public acts. The bell, which still today keeps time, is one of the oldest in Piemonte.
