Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo Municipale (Asti)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
In 1558, Emanuel Philibert of Savoy gave the city a small building located near the Collegiata di San Secondo and from that moment, the seat of the City, which had been located near the Cathedral, was moved closer to the market square, the heart of city commerce. In 1727, the typically medieval structure of this city building was totally redone by the architect Benedetto Alfieri, who left many traces of himself in the city. This reinterpretation of the town hall was a test-bed for the young professional who adopted unique solutions by looking at Austrian and Bavarian models.
The project for the Palazzo (Town Hall), besides envisioning and organizing the spaces meant for public administration, includes rooms to rent out to merchants and a covered area for the animal market. Entering into the building’s atrium, one reaches the main Staircase by a four-step scalone d’onore The rooms of the Town Hall are decorated and adorned with precious portraits of city’s well-known citizens, while the Reception Hall has a frescoed ceiling.
