Canelli

“E poi giri l’angolo, alzi lo squardo e c’e la vigna, ci sono le colline, l’odore della terra, della compagna che si amalgama allo spazio urbano. C’e un paesaggio agrario tra i piu antichi e belli del Nord Italia, frutto di una permanenza secolare e caparbia di generazioni contadine, che per secoli, forse per millenni, si sono consumate sulle medesime vigne, sugli stessi poderi dai comfini immutabili” (“And then turn the corner, raise your eyes and there is the vineyard, there are the hills, the scent of the earth, of the countryside that reaches toward the urban area. There is a bucolic landscape among the most ancient and beautiful in northern Italy, the fruit of a steadfastness that is secular and obstinate from generations of farmers, who, for centuries, perhaps for millennia, have spent their energy on these same vines, on these same farms with unchanging boundaries”). Today, as in the past, Canelli is the “citta del vino” (“city of wine”), a place where a tourist has the possibility of following an itinerary, unique in the world, that weaves through the wine cellars – true and proper underground “cattedrali” (“cathedrals”) – that extend 13 kilometers beneath the city. Dug out from the innards of tuff during the 19th century, they are cool, “naturali” cellars with the ideal temperature and humidity for local wine businesses.
The idea that the cellars of Canelli should become a UNESCO world heritage of humanity site came about some time ago. In fact, just go below the Gancia, Contratto, or Coppo properties in order to see just how original and unique the spectacle is. The cellars – where ancient kegs and barrels are kept perfectly aligned – have brick vaulted structures with low, large Gothic arches connected by tunnels that reach the stratum and layers of earth that have formed over the centuries.
