Category: Modern and contemporary art

Torino

Turin was the first Italian city to promote, through its own Civic museum opened in 1863, a public collection of modern art. The present GAM – inaugurated in 1993 – is on the same site chosen by Carlo Bassi and Goffredo Baschetti at the end of the ‘50’s. Today, the museum, completely renovated, has enlarged its exhibition space. The Gallery’s artistic patrimony consists of 15,000 works divided among paintings, sculptures, installations, and photos, plus a rich collection of drawings and engravings. The collections, which go from the end of the 13th century to today, document, above al, Italian art, but also include important pieces of art from other countries. There are more than 700 works permanently exhibited. Among the 19th century artists, there are: Massimo d’Azeglio, the landscape artists Fontanesi and Delleani, Pelizza de Volpedo, Mancini, Fattori among the painters and Medardo Rosso and Vincenzo Gemito among the sculptors. In the 20th century collections, the names Casorati, Martini, Morandi, De Pisis, Manzu, Melotti, Burri, Fontana, and Mastroianni stand out. A chosen group of paintings document the international Avant-garde from Modigliani to Balla, to Severini, to Boccioni, to De Chirico and from Dix to Ernst, Klee, and Picabia.
Contemporary art is represented by works from the most important trends of the moment: Informal, Neo-Dada, Pop Art, particularly represented beyond the Italian art of the Sixties, by the Arte Povera Movement which had Turin as its most important creative center.
