Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo Rosso (Alessandria)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
The Palazzo del Municipio (City Hall), known as Palazzo Rosso due to the color of the façade opening up to porticos on the side of Piazza della Liberta, is characterized by a famous three-quarter clock with a blue background that depicts the heavenly arch and the lunar phases, as well as by a peculiar placing at the top: a young cock which the people of Alessandria stole from the people of Casale in 1215 during the wars between Comuni (Medieval Communes). The clock and its history signify the little square in front called “Piazza dell’orologio” (Watch Square) in fact, in order tot to confuse it with Piazza Garibaldi which is in front of the park at the railroad station and which also has a building with a clock. Palazzo Rosso also included the city Teatro, inaugurated in 1775, which was destroyed during the bombings of 1944.
