Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo Ghilini (Alessandria)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
The Palazzo, built in the 18th century on the request of the Marquis Tommaso Maria Ghilini, is a major example of Piemonte Baroque architecture. Designed by Benedetto Alfieri, with Giovanbattista Gianotti taking over later, the structure has two atriums – the first has an octagonal shape and the second, a rectangular shape - one after the other, which face a courtyard with a staircase “a tenaglia” (curved flight). Domenico Caselli managed the first construction and built the main body of the structure, while the creation of the northern section came later. During the second half of the 19th century, the Savoy family, who now owned the palace, built the southern part. The building’s façade has numerous references to Roman architecture, such as the tablets and the brackets, while the interior has been divided according to the criteria of separation between the dwelling and the public spaces. In the ‘60’s, Palazzo Ghilini was acquired by the city’s Consiglio Provincial (Provincial Council), where today it has its seat along with the Prefetture (Prefecture).
