Buildings of historical importance
Palatium Vetius (Alessandria)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
The heart of political, administrative, and judicial life in the medieval city, the Palatium was built around 1170 at the same time that Alessandria was founded. The building, which included the Pavaglione – that is, the Armeria (Armory) – and some administrative offices, extended down Via Migliara all the way to Via dei Martiri with various annexed buildings and interior courtyards. These buildings, which have also housed the offices of the Podesta and the Capitano del Popolo, were also a penitentiary between the 12th and the 14th century. In 1856, Palatium Vetius was ceded to the State which, bit-by-bit, sold it off to the private sector. A Caserma (Barracks) and military Distretto (Center) until 1995, the complex was recently acquired by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio (Savings Bank Foundation) as a space for events and exhibits.
