Buildings of historical importance
Edicola e piazza della Bollente (Acqui Terme)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
The Bollente is an elegant octagonal-shaped little temple-building inaugurated in 1879 in the square of the same name. This eclectic structure shows a thermal spring that spurts out sulphureous-salty-bromine-iodic water at a temperature of 74.5 degrees Celsius. Next to the Bollente (Boiling One), one can also see the civic Torre (Tower) built in 1763 on a gate of the city’s ancient boundary wall dating back to the period of Comuni (medieval communes). One local legend tells how the newly-born children of Acqui were taken to the spring of the Bollente to be immersed for a second – whoever survived was nick-named “Sgaiento”, which means “scorched”. Known and used since Roman times, the Bollente spring is still today the most widely used spring in Acqui’s thermal spas.
