Abbeys and churches
Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Acqui Terme)
Category: Abbeys and churches
The Duomo has retained the three semi-circular apses, the transept, and the terracotta bell tower finished during the 13th century from its original structure, built in 1067 and reworked during later periods. The façade has a 17th century portico with columns and a marble main entrance that dates back to 1481. The cathedral’s interior is divided into five naves and has precious, finely sculpted wood furnishings made during the Baroque period. The crypt, located below the presbytery, is made up of two bodies: one running lengthwise and one transversal with a single apse. Both bodies are divided into three small naves by slender columns. The precious triptych of the “Madonna di Montserrat”, the work of Bartolome Bermejo, the great Spanish painter from the 15th century, is located in the sacristy. Annexed to the church, is the cloister of the Canonica (parsonage) dating back to the 14th century with ruins from Roman times.
