Antiche e Nuove Terme (Acqui Terme)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
Already a famous thermal spa during the Roman Era, so much so that it was called “Aquae Statiellae”, the city had two important installations. The more important of the two, discovered during the last century while excavations were being carried out under the direction of the engineer Ceuti beneath the Neo-Classical temple, is located at the present-day Piazza della Bollente. As a testament to those ancient spas, one can still see today a fragment of the pool’s mosaic floor under the portico on Via Saracco and several marble seats kept at the Museo Archeologico. The second of the two consists of another thermal pool discovered in 2002. Among the hydraulic installations meant for public use, a footed fountain with a rectangular stone basin used as a drinking fountain was found which can be seen from the transparent cupola that protects it. Always rich in springs, the territory of Acqui offers a spectrum of thermal waters that spans from 70 degrees to 90 degrees Celsius. The water from the “Bollente” (“Boiling”) spring is used for therapies at the central spa “Nuove Terme”. Inaugurated in 1891, the “Grand Hotel Thermae” became, in a short time, one of the most popular spots in Europe during the Belle Époque, as popular with Europe’s royalty as it was with Winston Churchill. Today, transformed into the Grand Hotel Nuove Terme, it offers attentive and personalized service in a serene and welcoming atmosphere. It has 142 rooms, a restaurant, and historical bar with period decor and frescos, an almost 1,000-square-meter Beauty Farm with a thermal pool, a Turkish bath, a solarium, and seven rooms for beauty treatments and massages.
