Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo Gozani di San Giorgio (Casale Monferrato)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
This elegant building, partially reconstructed in 1775 following the design of Count Filippo Nicolis de Robilant for the Gozzani di San Giorgio family, was finished in 1778. The palace has a façade divided into three sections and windows framed with stucco works. The columned doorway has a balcony on top with stone balustrades. Through the entrance hall, refined by columns and a fan window in wrought iron, one enters the courtyard flanked by a preexisting structure. To the right of the entrance hall, there is a colonnade, closed with a wrought iron gate which carries the coat of arms of the Gozzani, where the busts of the mayors by Leonardo Bistolfi and a bronze tondo by Odoardo Tabacchi have been placed. Since 1885, the palace has been the seat of city Administration. From the Salone (hall) used for Community Council meetings, one enters the gallery, a large loggia that opens onto a balcony. The red room, with its frescoed ceiling by Francesco Lorenzi - an allegory of the incarnation of Ceres, the goddess of abundance - hosts official ceremonies. The palace’s old 18th century wing, not reconstructed by Robilant, which still has its, recently restored, ceiling frescoes by Pietro Francesco Guala (1698-1757) depicting “Bacco e Arianna accolti in cielo da Venere e Cupido” (”Bacchus and Ariadne Welcomed to heaven by Venus and Cupid”), looks out over the courtyard.
