Casale Monferrato

On the left side of the Chiesa (Church) di San Stefano, is the Torre Civica (Civic Tower), the symbol of Casale Monferrato which dates back, most probably, to the year one thousand. Built in bricks following a square design, it stands out in the historical center at 60 meters high and its brand new lighting system allows us to admire it in all of its beauty. The Torre has undergone additions and enlargements: in 1510, the Marquis del Monferrato, Guglielmo IX Paleologo, commissioned a bell tower to be placed on top of the terrace; during the Savoy period, the tower was given the addition of an elegant Baroque cupola, painted plaster works (for example, the city coat of arms placed in the center of the façade), and stucco ornamentation work. Its present-day look is the result of the restoration works carried out in 1920.
