Museo Nazionale della Montagna "Duca degli Abruzzi" (Torino)
Category: Thematic
The first step in the museum’s creation goes back to August 9, 1874 when an alpine observation post, an observatory consisting of a simple pavilion with a moveable telescope, was installed on Monte dei Cappuccini. Moved forward by the Italian Alpine Club, the project found a seat in the former Cappuccini convent on the Turin hill. The Museum of the Mountain testifies to the close relationship between Turin and the Alps. The exhibition space offers a deeper philological reconstruction of the history, of the culture, and of the traditions of the Alps, told through the extensive documentation of remains and materials. The mountain is known through its multiple aspects: from the natural and environmental ones to the traditional ones, from alpine activities to historical material. The museum structure houses an historical film vault and manages, in collaboration with CAI, a library and documentation center.
