Palazzo Comunale (Alba)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
Built during the 14th century on the remains of Roman walls, the Palazzo del Comune stands out on Piazza Risorgimento, the ancient “forum” where the market, around which town life revolved, was held. It is a two-storey building with its main entrance under a grand portico where once the “libro della catena” hung, which held the laws and decrees from 1224. An entrance staircase, with two groups of 16th century frescos from the Chiesa di San Domenico on its walls, leads to the upper floor where precious paintings adorn various rooms. The council hall has a valuable painting by Macrino d’Alba depicting the “Madonna in trono con Bambino che stringe una mela, San Francesco, San Tommaso e due dame oranti” (“Virgin Mary on the Throne with Child Who Is Holding an Apple, Saint Francis, Saint Thomas, and Two Women Praying”).
