Orto Botanico (Torino)
Category: Science and technology
Founded in 1729 by King Vittorio Amedeo II, the Orto Botanico is an integral part of University Department of Plant Biology. Immersed in the green of Valentino – now the Po Nature Park, very close to the Castle – the Garden has a significant collection of medicinal plants to which an almost complete “catalogue” of the spontaneous flora that grows in the area has been added. The 27 thousand square meters of this green oasis tells how much there is to know about trees, flowers, and shrubs besides offering a major collection of Mediterranean plants such as tree strawberries, myrtles, and capers. A 64 volume library collection faithfully reproduces 7,500 plants in watercolor.
