Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo Salmatoris (Cherasco)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
At present, the property of the town, Palazzo Salmatoris was built between 1616 and 1620 by the nobleman, Giovanni di Audino Salmatoris who, in Lyon, made his fortune in the silk trade. The palazzo’s history is interwoven with the historical events that took place in the first years after it was built, in which Cherasco played a leading role. In 1631, while plague and war raged, the building welcomed and gave refuge to Vittorio Amedeo I and to his wife, Crsitina di Francia; in 1706, the Holy Shroud was packed away in the little hall “of silence” out of fear that it would end up in the hands of the French. Also in this symbolic place, Napoleon signed the 1796 armistice of Cherasco. In the mid 19th century, the palazzo was acquired by the Paoletti del Melle di Busca family who began important restoration work, calling in the best craftsmen and artists of the time to work on the project. Today, it is an important cultural and artistic center, the ideal spot for exhibits and cultural events.
