Rivoli

The Rivoli Castle is a particular architectural context for the contemporary works of art which are exhibited there. The museum, a unique place in the world, has thirty-eight rooms where the third floor of the Manica Lunga meets, bringing the total exhibition area to almost seven thousand square meters. Restored, beginning in 1979 at the request of the Piedmont Region, the Castle designed by Juvarra, became the seat of the Museum of Contemporary Art in 1984 when it inaugurated a large overview of the latest trends with “Ouverture” and gave itself – in brief time - the standing of being one of the most important European spaces for contemporary art. Today, the permanent collection on the first and second floor has works by internationally celebrated artists with particular attention paid to Minimalist art, Conceptual art, Land art, and the Arte Povera Movement. The works, at times, are conceived by the artist for a particular space or room as is demonstrated by the spatial environmental work of Lucio Fontana, the painted room by Sol Lewitt, and the sculptures by Claes Oldenburg and Giovanni Anselmo. Works by the Arte Povera group – Merz, Zorio, Penone, Pistoletto, Paolini, Mainolfi, Kounellis – and the area dedicated to various foreign artists such as Beecroft, Oppenheim, Buren, Kirkeby, and Horn deserve special mention. With the inauguration of the Manica Lunga in 1991, the second monumental grouping of the Savoy residencies, which was formerly set up as a picture gallery, came to life. The 17th century building, more than 140 meters long by 7 meters wide, offers temporary exhibits and has a convention hall, library, video vault, teaching workshops, a bookstore, a lecture hall, and a cafeteria.
