Ecomuseo della Canapa (Carmagnola)

The Ecomuseo della Canapa (Ecological Museum of Hemp Cloth) was set up in Borgo San Bernardo utilizing an original “sente” (path – sentiere – for work) from 1905. It illustrates the various phases in the creation of the textile fiber and conserves the tools necessary for this. In past centuries, Carmagnola’s agricultural development depended strongly on hemp farming, which in these sandy areas grew easily. After having been cultivated, the fiber was turned into cloth and rope meant for export. With the discovery of artificial fibers and the assertion of always more restrictive regulation on hemp farming, the business was abandoned in favor of growing rare, prized vegetables.
