Cappella del Conte (San Giorio di Susa)
Category: Abbeys and churches
The rural hamlet of San Giorio, surmounted by the remains of its splendid castle on a hill at the centre of the lowest part of the valley on the right bank of the Dora river, keeps its alpine dimension intact. A characteristic that is emphasised as well by a mountain of great beauty, in the heart of the Parco dell’Orsiera, along the deep valley of the Gravio torrent – one of the most evocative itineraries of the natural reserve along with the Lago Rosso and the scree of the Cassafrera surrounding the peaks of Villano, Malanotte and Pian Paris, the Cristalliera, the Pain Reale and Rocciavré. Surrounded by majestic chestnut groves, the centre of production of the prized Valsusa chestnut, San Giorio evolves around the parish church that dates back to the year 1000. In the cappella del Conte (chapel of the Count) the historic/legendary re-enactment is celebrated: the Suppression of the fealty, with the presence of the “spadonari” (gentlemen dressed in costumes performing a sword dance).
