Category: Buildings of historical importance
Set up by Carlo Alberto in 1837, the Biblioteca Reale (Royal Library) is part of the Palazzo Reale complex designed by Carlo Amedeo di Castellamonte and residence of the Savoy royal family until 1865. The royal architect Pelagio Pelagi lined the library with valuable, double height wooden bookshelves and had the ceiling vaults painted by Moja and Trefogli with subjects portraying the Arts and Sciences. The Biblioteca Reale houses important collections of manuscripts, illuminated codes and etchings. There are over 2000 drawings in the precious collection donated by Carlo Alberto, which includes several drawings by Leonardo Da Vinci, inlcuding: Autoritratto (Self-portarait), the Volto dell’Angelo (Angel’s Face), a preparatory sketch for the Vergine delle Rocce (Virgin of the Rocks) and the Codice sul Volo (Code on Flight).
