Museums
Fondazione Merz (Torino)
Category: Modern and contemporary art
Inaugurated in 2004, just over a year after the death of Mario Merz, a heritage of great artistic value was created to house the collection of works of the “rather” of Arte Povera, with the aim of preserving it, protecting it, making it accessible and comprehensible to a vast audience. The Foundation is a place where one can retrace the history of a painter-sculptor, assembler-installer, existential and conceptual constructor, who made his debut in 1953 with an abstract expressionist pictorial language, carrying out an informal material and visionary research. A "temple-home" for the artist-cum-philosopher who shoes the spiral – its strength, its thrust, its becoming circular, its continuous, growing and centrifuge dynamism – to tell of the cosmic movement, the continuous and regenerating cycle of nature. The headquarters of the Foundation are located in the former boiler rooms of Officine Lancia in Borgo San Paolo, an example of industrial architecture of the 1930’s. The Foundation is committed to sustaining the study, research and promotion of projects linked with contemporary art ad culture.
