Buildings of historical importance
Palazzo Asperia (Alessandria)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
Designed in 1925 by the engineer, Giovanni Chevalley, it saw its first stone laid only in 1931. The building is a pastiche of 20th century eclecticism of which Chevalley and the maestro Ceppi were stars. This tendency, which made its mark particularly in Torino after the Liberty style around 1911, is based on the reprisal of architectural styles from the past - geometrized. In fact, the building takes typical elements from Torino Baroque, such as windows and main entrances similar to those found in certain military structures, and gives them an almost Expressionist emphasis, while Doric elements can be seen in the corner pilasters. The windows on the top floor, almost without any form of embellishment and considered only in terms of function, create a strong visual impact. The result is a very striking mixture that blends Baroque with Expressionism, 20th century with rationalism, the courtly with the functional, giving Palazzo Asperia solemnity and composure. Today, after its renovation, the Palazzo is a structure for important exhibits, fairs, and cultural events.
