Nuovo Percorso Archeologico della Domus Romana (Asti)
Category: History and archaeology
The domus was a type of house in ancient Roma different from the villa suburbana, a private home outside the city walls, or from the villa rustica located in the countryside and with areas for agricultural work. The remains at the Asti archeological site are the proof of a domus that dates back to the second half of the first century A.D. The structure is located about eighty meters north of the city’s western gate (Torre Rosso), which, in fact, closed off the west end of the decumano massimo (today’s Corso Alfieri). Among the remains of the domus, the white mosaic cocciopesto (a lime and terracotta mixture) “carpet” which adorned the flooring of the dining room is worth noting. The mosaic with round, rectangular, and rhomboid-shaped tiles in colored marble and adorned with the figures of fish and ivy twigs, is bordered by two frames of black and white tesseras - one, a herringbone pattern and the other, a plaited design.
