Villa Ponti e Giardino (Arona)
Category: Buildings of historical importance
Villa Ponti is a splendid 18th century villa located in the historical center of Arona, a few steps from Lago Maggiore. The garden has a fountain inspired by Baroque models, surrounded by beech trees, atlas cedars, and magnolias. Bartolomeo Pertossi, a wealthy Flemish merchant and friend of Napoleon I whom he visited several times after his return from the Egyptian Campaign, had the villa built around 1760 on the bastions of the Rocca (Fortress). Villa Ponti is the house where Gian Giacomo Ponti, student of Thomas Edison and professor of electronics at the Politecnico in Torino, was born. The manor still has its 18th century core, but in many areas it has been revamped, especially during the first decades of the 20th century. At the beginning of the last century, the garden, characterized by tall beech trees and atlas cedars and by vegetation characteristic of the lake area - magnolias, azaleas, and rhododendrons - was also redesigned.
